Design of a 22 Scintillating Tile Package for the Sdc Barrel Electromagnetic Tile/fiber Calorimeter

We describe R&D results on optical properties of a scintillating tile//ber system for the SDC barrel electromagnetic calorimeter. The tile//ber system uses a wavelength shifting ber to readout the signal of a scintillating plate (tile) and a clear ber to transmit the signal to a phototube. In the SDC calorimeter design, four of tile//ber systems are grouped as a 22 tile package so that the gap width between and the location of the tiles in the absorber slot can be controlled. Optical properties of the tile package such as the light yield, its uniformity, and crosstalks were measured in a testbench with a-ray source and in a 2-GeV/c + testbeam. The performance as an electromagnetic calorimeter was evaluated by a GEANT simulation using the measured response map. We discuss a method of correction for the calorimeter nonuniformity.

We report on the study of the eeect of the Tile calorimeter thickness in the ATLAS Barrel calorimeter performance. The reduction of the Tile Calorimeter depth by 20 cm would have severe consequences on the hadron calorimeter performance and would increase the punchtrough probability in the muon chambers placed behind the calorimeter.
